Don't Be Faithless
any
longer, Believe!
Our
text is John 20:24-29
24
One of the disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the
others when Jesus came. 25 They told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds
in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the
wound in his side.”
26
Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time
Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before,
Jesus was standing among them. He said, “Peace
be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put
your finger here and see my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my
side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!”
28
“My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed.
29
Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you
have seen me. Blessed are those who haven’t seen me and believe
anyway.”
Are
you a disciple of Jesus? If you said yes does He know you? Matthew
7:21-23
21
“Not all people who sound religious are
really godly. They may refer to me as ‘Lord,’ but they still
won’t enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The decisive issue is whether
they obey my Father in heaven. 22 On
judgment day many will tell me, ‘Lord, Lord, we prophesied in your
name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in
your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I
never knew you. Go away; the things you did were unauthorized.’
How
do we get to know Him?
We
must have child like faith. In other words actually believe what the
bible says and act on it.
Mark 10:13-16 13
One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could
touch them and bless them, but the disciples told them not to bother
him. 14 But when Jesus saw what was happening, he was very displeased
with his disciples. He said to them, “Let
the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God
belongs to such as these.
15 I
assure you, anyone who doesn’t have their kind of faith will never
get into the Kingdom of God.”
16 Then he took the children into his arms and placed his hands on
their heads and blessed them.
It
is OK to question, but don't back away or drift away from God because
of unanswered questions go after the answer. Unanswered questions can
lead to doubt and unbelief.
John
14:1-14
1 “Don’t
be troubled. You trust God, now trust in me. 2 There
are many rooms in my Father’s home, and I am going to prepare a
place for you. If this were not so, I would tell you plainly.
3 When everything is ready, I will come and get
you, so that you will always be with me where I am. 4 And
you know where I am going and how to get there.”
5
“No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We haven’t any
idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and
the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. 7
If you had known who I am, then you would have
known who my Father is. From now on you know him and have seen him!”
8
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and we will be satisfied.”
9
Jesus replied, “Philip, don’t you even yet
know who I am, even after all the time I have been with you? Anyone
who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking to see
him? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in
the Father and the Father is in me? The words I say are not my own,
but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. 11
Just believe that I am in the Father and the
Father is in me. Or at least believe because of what you have seen me
do.
12
“The truth is, anyone who believes in me will
do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am
going to be with the Father. 13 You can
ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, because the work of
the Son brings glory to the Father. 14 Yes,
ask anything in my name, and I will do it!
If we need a
miracle we need to first of all honour the Word of God as it is Jesus
speaking... it is Jesus!
John 1:1-5
1 In the beginning
the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. 2 He was
in the beginning with God. 3 He created everything there is. Nothing
exists that he didn’t make. 4 Life itself was in him, and this life
gives light to everyone. 5 The light shines through the darkness, and
the darkness can never extinguish it.
John
1:14
14
So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was
full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory,
the glory of the only Son of the Father.
We
also need to learn how to honour the person who is teaching or
preaching the promises of God in order to receive them. We see this
in Matthew 13:53-58
53
When Jesus had finished telling these stories, he left that part of
the country. 54 He returned to Nazareth, his hometown. When he taught
there in the synagogue, everyone was astonished and said, “Where
does he get his wisdom and his miracles? 55 He’s just a carpenter’s
son, and we know Mary, his mother, and his brothers—James, Joseph,
Simon, and Judas. 56 All his sisters live right here among us. What
makes him so great?” 57 And they were deeply offended and refused
to believe in him.
Then
Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored
everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family.”
58 And so he did only a few miracles there because of their unbelief.
It is no
different today in the local church. If we want a miracle or true
change in our lives we must strive to know Him. Not to seek the
miracle, but the provider. Not to seek the healing, but the healer.
Not to seek the blessing, but the Bless-er.
Phil. 3:1-11 we
see Paul's heart in how he worked at trying to get this massage
across.
Philippians
3:1-11
1 Whatever happens,
dear brothers and sisters, may the Lord give you joy. I never get
tired of telling you this. I am doing this for your own good.
2
Watch out for those dogs, those wicked men and their evil deeds,
those mutilators who say you must be circumcised to be saved. 3 For
we who worship God in the Spirit are the only ones who are truly
circumcised. We put no confidence in human effort. Instead, we boast
about what Christ Jesus has done for us.
4
Yet I could have confidence in myself if anyone could. If others have
reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more! 5 For I
was circumcised when I was eight days old, having been born into a
pure-blooded Jewish family that is a branch of the tribe of Benjamin.
So I am a real Jew if there ever was one! What’s more, I was a
member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the
Jewish law. 6 And zealous? Yes, in fact, I harshly persecuted the
church. And I obeyed the Jewish law so carefully that I was never
accused of any fault.
7
I once thought all these things were so very important, but now I
consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. 8 Yes,
everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of
knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have discarded everything else,
counting it all as garbage, so that I may have Christ 9 and become
one with him. I no longer count on my own goodness or my ability to
obey God’s law, but I trust Christ to save me. For God’s way of
making us right with himself depends on faith. 10 As a result, I can
really know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him
from the dead. I can learn what it means to suffer with him, sharing
in his death, 11 so that, somehow, I can experience the resurrection
from the dead!
If
we get this and determine to know Him, Jesus our Lord... We will see
God's Glory & anything is possible!
John
11:25-26
25
Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and
the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die like everyone
else, will live again. 26 They are given
eternal life for believing in me and will never perish. Do you
believe this, Martha?”
John
11:40
40
Jesus responded, “Didn’t
I tell you that you will see God’s glory if you believe?”
Romans
10:7-10
7
And it says, “You don’t need to go to the place of the dead”
(to bring Christ back to life again). 8 Salvation that comes from
trusting Christ—which is the message we preach—is already within
easy reach. In fact, the Scriptures say, “The message is close at
hand; it is on your lips and in your heart.”
9
For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in
your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10
For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with
God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.
So if we believe
this way and truly walk in it how will it affect our lives?
John 14:12
12
“The
truth is, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have
done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the
Father.
Now
that excites me! We
will be like Him!
We know God is
no respecter of persons... what does that mean? He does not care
who you are, but what you believe! You can walk in John 14:12! All
through the book of Acts we see the results of those who chose to
believe and take Jesus at His Word. Then we can do what He sent us
to do!
Mark 16:14-20
14
Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating
together. He rebuked them for their unbelief—their stubborn refusal
to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
15
And then he told them, “Go into all the world
and preach the Good News to everyone, everywhere. 16 Anyone
who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to
believe will be condemned. 17 These
signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in
my name, and they will speak new languages. 18 They
will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything
poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their
hands on the sick and heal them.”
John
20:30-31
30
Jesus’ disciples saw him do many other miraculous signs besides the
ones recorded in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may
believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by
believing in him you will have life.
I don't know
about you, but I want that life.
You have not
lived until you learn to believe.
