What
did Jesus do for us? When
we read
Mathew 27:27-66 we can a glimpse of what He did for us.
Matthew 27:27-66 27 Some of the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into their headquarters and called out the entire battalion. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. 29 They made a crown of long, sharp thorns and put it on his head, and they placed a stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery, yelling, “Hail! King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on him and grabbed the stick and beat him on the head with it. 31 When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.
32 As they were on the way, they came across a man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, and they forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. 33 Then they went out to a place called Golgotha (which means Skull Hill). 34 The soldiers gave him wine mixed with bitter gall, but when he had tasted it, he refused to drink it. 35 After they had nailed him to the cross, the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. 36 Then they sat around and kept guard as he hung there. 37 A signboard was fastened to the cross above Jesus’ head, announcing the charge against him. It read: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” 38 Two criminals were crucified with him, their crosses on either side of his. 39 And the people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. 40 “So! You can destroy the Temple and build it again in three days, can you? Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!” 41 The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders also mocked Jesus. 42 “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself! So he is the king of Israel, is he? Let him come down from the cross, and we will believe in him! 43 He trusted God—let God show his approval by delivering him! For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” 44 And the criminals who were crucified with him also shouted the same insults at him.
45 At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 46 At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah. 48 One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a stick so he could drink. 49 But the rest said, “Leave him alone. Let’s see whether Elijah will come and save him.” 50 Then Jesus shouted out again, and he gave up his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain in the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart, 52 and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead 53 after Jesus’ resurrection. They left the cemetery, went into the holy city of Jerusalem, and appeared to many people. 54 The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, “Truly, this was the Son of God!” 55 And many women who had come from Galilee with Jesus to care for him were watching from a distance. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James and Joseph), and Zebedee’s wife, the mother of James and John.
57 As evening approached, Joseph, a rich man from Arimathea who was one of Jesus’ followers, 58 went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. And Pilate issued an order to release it to him. 59 Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a long linen cloth. 60 He placed it in his own new tomb, which had been carved out of the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance as he left. 61 Both Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting nearby watching.
62 The next day—on the first day of the Passover ceremonies—the leading priests and Pharisees went to see Pilate. 63 They told him, “Sir, we remember what that deceiver once said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will be raised from the dead.’ 64 So we request that you seal the tomb until the third day. This will prevent his disciples from coming and stealing his body and then telling everyone he came back to life! If that happens, we’ll be worse off than we were at first.” 65 Pilate replied, “Take guards and secure it the best you can.” 66 So they sealed the tomb and posted guards to protect it.
It
is so much more than just fire insurance!
To explain all
that was made available to us on that day would take eternity to
explain. Just for the record - I'm still learning.
We
have read what Jesus did for us -
what did Jesus ask us to do for
Him?
The
answer I believe is found in Matthew 28:18-20
“18
Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have
been given complete authority in heaven and on earth. 19
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the
Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new
disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of
this: I am with you always, even
to the end of the age.”
And
in Mark 16:15-18
“15
And then he told them, “Go into all the world
and preach the Good News to everyone, everywhere. 16 Anyone
who believes and is baptized
will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.
17 These signs will accompany those who
believe: They will cast out
demons in my name, and they will speak new languages. 18 They
will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything
poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They
will be able to place their hands on the sick and heal them.”
Are
you actively doing these things...
and seeing those results?
I
love what Jesus says in John 14:12-14 - (One
of the greatest truths, but least taught!)
“12
“The truth
is, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and
even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.
13 You can ask for anything in my name,
and I will do it, because the work of the Son brings glory to the
Father. 14 Yes, ask anything in my name,
and I will do it!”
Religion
says, “I'll do it - trust in me!”
Relationship
says, “He will do it - Trust in Him!
Most
people have heard that Jesus “went about doing good and healing
everyone He met” Right?
Wrong!
He could only “do good and heal,”
those that would believe!
Matthew
13:53-58
53
When Jesus had finished telling these stories, he left that part of
the country. 54 He returned to Nazareth, his hometown. When he taught
there in the synagogue, everyone was astonished and said, “Where
does he get his wisdom and his miracles? 55 He’s
just a carpenter’s son, and we know Mary, his mother, and his
brothers—James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas. 56 All his sisters live
right here among us. What makes him so great?” 57 And they were
deeply offended and refused to believe in him.
Then
Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored
everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family.”
58 And so he did only a few miracles there because of their
unbelief.
RELIGION (what
we have heard) and what we see (circumstances or situations) - will
block what Jesus has for us.
RELATIONSHIP
looks through the crowd, looks through the day-to-day junk we face,
looks through what have heard or expect Jesus to be or do!
Relationship, with Jesus personally, looks to Him and not the church,
not the building, not the pastor, not to what you heard all your life
about Christianity!
Relationship
is simply believing what Jesus
said and continues to say in His Word!
The
disciples believed what Jesus said and the result was...
Acts 5:12-16 12 Meanwhile, the apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 No one else dared to join them, though everyone had high regard for them. 14 And more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord—crowds of both men and women. 15 As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. 16 Crowds came in from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed.
Acts 9:32-43 32 Peter traveled from place to place to visit the believers, and in his travels he came to the Lord’s people in the town of Lydda. 33 There he met a man named Aeneas, who had been paralyzed and bedridden for eight years. 34 Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you! Get up and make your bed!” And he was healed instantly. 35 Then the whole population of Lydda and Sharon turned to the Lord when they saw Aeneas walking around. 36 There was a believer in Joppa named Tabitha (which in Greek is Dorcas). She was always doing kind things for others and helping the poor. 37 About this time she became ill and died. Her friends prepared her for burial and laid her in an upstairs room. 38 But they had heard that Peter was nearby at Lydda, so they sent two men to beg him, “Please come as soon as possible!” 39 So Peter returned with them; and as soon as he arrived, they took him to the upstairs room. The room was filled with widows who were weeping and showing him the coats and other garments Dorcas had made for them. 40 But Peter asked them all to leave the room; then he knelt and prayed. Turning to the body he said, “Get up, Tabitha.” And she opened her eyes! When she saw Peter, she sat up! 41 He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then he called in the widows and all the believers, and he showed them that she was alive. 42 The news raced through the whole town, and many believed in the Lord. 43 And Peter stayed a long time in Joppa, living with Simon, a leather worker.
The
true Church is not a building!
It is a body!
Ephesians 4:1-16 1 Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. 2 Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. 3 Always keep yourselves united in the Holy Spirit, and bind yourselves together with peace. 4 We are all one body, we have the same Spirit, and we have all been called to the same glorious future. 5 There is only one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 and there is only one God and Father, who is over us all and in us all and living through us all. 7 However, he has given each one of us a special gift according to the generosity of Christ. 8 That is why the Scriptures say, “When he ascended to the heights, he led a crowd of captives and gave gifts to his people.” 9 Notice that it says “he ascended.” This means that Christ first came down to the lowly world in which we live. 10 The same one who came down is the one who ascended higher than all the heavens, so that his rule might fill the entire universe. 11 He is the one who gave these gifts to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ, 13 until we come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature and full grown in the Lord, measuring up to the full stature of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone has told us something different or because someone has cleverly lied to us and made the lie sound like the truth. 15 Instead, we will hold to the truth in love, becoming more and more in every way like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. 16 Under his direction, the whole body is fitted together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.
Ephesians 1:15-23 15 Ever since I first heard of your strong faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for Christians everywhere, 16 I have never stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, 17 asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. 18 I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the wonderful future he has promised to those he called. I want you to realize what a rich and glorious inheritance he has given to his people. 19 I pray that you will begin to understand the incredible greatness of his power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power 20 that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. 21 Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else in this world or in the world to come. 22 And God has put all things under the authority of Christ, and he gave him this authority for the benefit of the church. 23 And the church is his body; it is filled by Christ, who fills everything everywhere with his presence.
What
God can do through you,
for others, is determined by what you are willing to believe! What
God can do for you,
is also determined by what you are willing to believe.
Where
you live, is determined by, what you are willing to believe.
Again
I ask... are you Living in the Natural or the Supernatural?
